Unveils New Projects for Summer 2008

The Verdant Walk - Installation on Mall B in Downtown Cleveland

The Verdant Walk is a new temporary art and landscape installation on Mall B in downtown Cleveland by Toronto-based artists and landscape architects Peter North and Alissa North of North Design Office. The project was installed in May 2008 and will remain until 2010. The installation creates a stunning landscape by bringing more than 4,000 square feet of native Ohio grasses to the city's center, punctuated by a series of seven sculptures illuminated at night by new-technology solar fabric panels.

Mall B is located between Lakeside Avenue and St. Clair, next to the Cleveland Convention Center.

Buckeye Neighborhood Park on E. 118th Street & Buckeye Road

CPA, ParkWorks, and Buckeye Area Development Corporation implemented a comprehensive strategy for transforming the intersection of East 118th Street and Buckeye Road through landscape design, public art, and community events and programming, creating community space for the neighborhood. Construction for the project began in April and will conclude in July 2008.

This RTA transit waiting environment/park space includes a variety of elements including landscape design by McKnight & Associates. CPA coordinated a call for artists that resulted in two artists, photographer Chip Carter of Cleveland and muralist Francisca Ugalde of Hudson, being chosen to produce temporary (two-to-five-year) installations for the two major building walls that face the park. Funding for the murals was secured through a variety of sources including the Neighborhood Connections program of The Cleveland Foundation and the City of Cleveland's City Works grant program. In addition, CPA commissioned two artists, Angelica Pozo of Cleveland and James Simon of Pittsburgh, to design permanent public art elements for the new park. James Simon's sculpture was installed on June 23th and 24th and Angelica Pozo's mosaics began installation on July 1st and will be complete by July 11th. The park will be a more fitting home for the Art & Soul of Buckeye music festivals, which will run from July 11th through 13th.

This project is a part of a much larger strategic initiative that includes other major redevelopment initiatives along Buckeye Road and its enhancement and promotion as an arts and cultural district. A dedication ceremony for the park will take place in the summer of 2008.

Supporters of this project include: Neighborhood Progress Inc., Buckeye Area Development Corporation, Greater Cleveland RTA, St. Luke's Foundation, City of Cleveland, Charter One Bank, The Cleveland Foundation and the George Gund Foundation.

Euclid Avenue Planters on Public Square in Downtown Cleveland

CPA, in partnership with the Downtown Cleveland Alliance (DCA), is bringing the work of artists and designers into our city's public realm. Mark Reigelman, a Cleveland Institute of Art graduate, was commissioned to design decorative planters for the lower Euclid Avenue district. The shape of the planters themselves were inspired by bouquets of flowers. They will provide a healthy growing environment for seasonal plantings that will enhance the overall visual character of the downtown district along Euclid Avenue. Through their ongoing downtown beautification programs, ParkWorks will lead the design and installation of the vibrant seasonal plantings. For more pictures of the Euclid Avenue Planters, please click here. Downtown Cleveland Alliance is also sponsoring: The Downtown Photo Challenge, an amatuer photo contest! Submit your amateur photos addressing life and the build environment in Downtown Cleveland!
